If I were organizing our favorite experiences into a two-day itinerary, this is how I’d structure it to make the most of a short visit.
This isn’t the exact order we followed during our trip, but it’s a practical way to group many of the places we enjoyed.

Morning: Breakfast and Hagia Sophia
Start your day with Turkish breakfast at Seven Hills Restaurant before exploring Hagia Sophia and the surrounding historic district.
If you’re staying in Sultanahmet, you’ll be conveniently located for both.
Late morning: Basilica Cistern
Head to the Basilica Cistern, allowing approximately an hour inside and additional time for the queue.
Afternoon: Grand Bazaar
Spend the afternoon exploring the Grand Bazaar. Keep an eye out for traditional Turkish souvenirs, and make time to stop for coffee or tea along the way.
Evening: Turkish Dinner and Drinks
Enjoy a traditional Turkish meal. Pide and Adana kebab are both dishes I’d recommend trying.
If you’re staying in Sultanahmet, finish the evening exploring the neighborhood’s restaurants and bars.

Morning: Breakfast at Galata Süheyla
Start your second day with a leisurely Turkish breakfast at Galata Süheyla.
Late morning: Explore Galata
Spend some time wandering the streets around Galata Tower, stopping to admire the architecture and browse the shops.
Afternoon: Coffee and Cheesecake
Make time for San Sebastián cheesecake at Viyana Kahvesi. If it fits your route, include a stop at Coffee No. 4 to try Turkish coffee or pistachio coffee.
Late afternoon: Walk Across Galata Bridge
Head toward Galata Bridge in time for the late-afternoon light.
Watch the fishermen along the bridge, enjoy the views of the Golden Horn and take your time crossing back toward the historic district.
Evening: Dinner and Dessert
Finish your day with another Turkish meal and a visit to Hafız Mustafa.
If the Dubai chocolate pudding is available, I wouldn’t pass it up!

After spending two days exploring Istanbul, there are a few experiences that stand out as things I’d happily repeat and others I’d approach differently next time.
| Experience | My verdict | Why |
| Turkish breakfast at Galata Süheyla | THRILL | One of our favorite food experiences |
| Galata Bridge at sunset | THRILL | Fishermen, sunset views and a memorable atmosphere |
| Basilica Cistern | THRILL | Fascinating underground attraction; worth the queue |
| Hafız Mustafa | THRILL | That Dubai chocolate pudding alone makes me want to return |
| Viyana Kahvesi | THRILL | A lovely cheesecake stop while exploring Galata |
| Grand Bazaar | CHILL | Worth seeing, but the imitation designer merchandise wasn’t for me |
| Staying in Sultanahmet | THRILL | Convenient for a short sightseeing-focused trip |
| Our particular hotel | CHANGE | I’d stay in the area again but choose different accommodation |

The biggest thing I’d change is giving ourselves more time.
Two days was enough to experience several of Istanbul’s most famous attractions, enjoy some wonderful meals and get a feel for the city, but there’s so much more I’d like to explore.
I’d also choose a different hotel, although I’d happily consider staying in Sultanahmet again for its convenience.
And while I’m glad we experienced the Grand Bazaar, I’d spend less time looking through shops selling imitation designer merchandise and focus more on finding traditional Turkish products and exploring other areas of the city.

Two days in Istanbul is enough to enjoy a memorable introduction to the city, particularly if you focus on the historic district, Galata and a handful of experiences that genuinely interest you.
For us, some of the best memories weren’t necessarily the biggest attractions.
They were the Turkish breakfasts we lingered over, the incredible desserts, the tea set we brought home and the fishermen we watched along Galata Bridge as the sun went down.
If you’re visiting for the first time, my advice is to see the landmarks you’re excited about, but leave some room in your itinerary to simply wander, eat and experience the city.
Istanbul has a way of rewarding both.
